Madeleine Hardin from Lifeguard Digital Health

Lifeguard application

Feb 16, 2021 12:00 PM

Madeleine Hardin from Lifeguard Digital Health will talk with the club about Lifeguard, a new application to help prevent drug overdoses.

Madeleine was an Associate Professor of Communication at UFV, and became Associate Dean of Faculty for the College of Arts. Prior to joining UFV in 1990, Madeleine worked at CBC TV Vancouver as Assistant Assignment Editor, and at the Vancouver Aquarium as the Director of Fundraising. She retired from UFV in 2013 as she had a large benign brain tumour removed and had to learn how to navigate her new-normal world.

In 2015, Madeleine met Jeff Hardy, the founder and CEO of Lifeguard Digital Health. Jeff is passionate about saving the lives of people dying from opioid poisoning. Madeleine’s talk will be about how Jeff Hardy transformed his life and started a successful technology company while in a recovery house; and how Lifeguard Digital Health was developed with BC Emergency Health Services to become the smartphone version of a safe consumption site that has saved scores of lives in BC and will soon be adopted across Canada.

Attracting and Engaging Members

Mar 02, 2021 12:00 PM

PDG Peter Schultz will speak with us about ideas to attract and engage Rotary members.

Peter grew up in Toronto before attending the University of Guelph, where he met his wife Susan who was from Vancouver. His professional career began as a Research Scientist with the U.S. Department of Energy (Brookhaven N.Y.), followed by a Faculty position at the University of Western Ontario as a Professor of Physics. His team’s research resulted in approximately 100 academic articles and dozens of invited presentations and consultancies around the world. In 1992-93 Peter was awarded one of only two University of Western Ontario Distinguished Research Scientist positions.

Following academic life Peter & Susan relocated their family to western Canada and created a holding company and restaurant business, both of which they ran for 20 years until selling in 2015. Currently Peter remains active as a Research Advisor to a BC Tech startup Metabolic Insights Inc developing highly sensitive saliva-testing technology for insulin and the SARS-CoV-2 virus.   In addition to private enterprise, Peter devoted considerable time & energy to various community associations and projects, including the Downtown Kelowna Association (board member & President), various benefit events, and civic committees for the Planning and Transportation departments of Kelowna’s municipal government.

Peter joined the Kelowna Ogopogo Rotary Club in1997, and after a leave for a few years rejoined the Rotary Club of Kelowna in 2009, and finally the Rotary Now! Kelowna Club in 2020 as the founding charter member. He has served as Club President in 2012-13, Administrative Assistant Governor 2014-17, chair of the Rotary Leadership Institute 2014-17, editor of the District Directory, content webmaster for the District 2014-16, PETS Facilitator 2016-18, District Awards Chair 2014-15, Zone Institute trainer (2016 for “Rotary Now” and 2020 for the D.G. Class) and Chair for the 2017 District Conference in Kelowna. He is a strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation, contributing regularly as a Paul Harris Society member, Bequest Society and Major Donor.

Laura Schneider is an award winning curator and museum administrator. She has held curatorial and executive roles in Canadian arts organizations from coast to coast and is currently Executive Director at The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford, BC.

Schneider believes that the arts have the power to shape individuals and communities, and is committed to supporting artists and integrating creative practice more fully into the lives of those around her. With a keen understanding of public galleries as dynamic and dialogic spaces she envisions these places as nerve centers of cultural and community life where difficult conversations can occur and understanding and empathy can thrive.

She holds degrees in Art History from Queen’s University (Kingston, ON) and Carleton University (Ottawa, ON), a Bachelor of Education degree (University of Ottawa, ON), and professional certificates in Museum Leadership (Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University, IL) and Collections Management (University of Victoria, BC).

Wendy Neufeld

Abbotsford Community Foundation update

Apr 06, 2021 12:00 PM

Wendy has been a resident of Abbotsford for more than 40 years and graduated from W.J. Mouat high school.  She spent 36 years working in the insurance industry, earning her CIP designation and was licensed as a Level 3 Nominee and a Level 2 life insurance agent, with a primary focus on risk assessment of intensive livestock operations and providing appropriate insurance solutions.

In 2017, Wendy switched careers and took on the role of Executive Director at the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF), where she had previously held a volunteer role as Board Chair from 2013 to 2016.  When people ask her what she does for a living she always responds with “I raise money to give it away!”  The ACF has invested more than $12M in Abbotsford through grants and scholarships over their more than 40 year history.

Wendy has been a Rotarian with the Abbotsford-Sumas Rotary club for the past 20 years.  She was the club President in 2012 and has served on the Board for 15 years in almost all the respective leadership positions, including Treasurer and Secretary, as well as Assistant Governor.

Wendy is also a 15 year member of the Abbotsford Executive Association and sat on their Board for a period of 3 years.  She is married and has a seventeen-year old daughter.  She enjoys volunteering, reading, travelling, and hiking in her spare time.

April Klassen

Rotary Peace scholar

Apr 13, 2021 12:00 PM

April Klassen grew up in the Fraser Valley, but has found herself impassioned by the opportunities of a global world. The cultural exchanges she embraced as a youth led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in International Studies at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. Upon completing her degree, the next 10 years of her life were spent working and volunteering with NGO’s in the areas of global development, and peacemaking. She has worked in France, Turkey, Iraq, Burundi, Bangladesh and Cambodia amongst other countries. Working with refugee and migrant families has become one of her greatest joys. To see community bridge culture, language and conflict is what drives her to want to continue in this particular field. Receiving a Rotary Peace Fellowship, she hopes, will help equip her in her work to walk alongside women and youth in areas of conflict. She is grateful and humbled by the support she has already received and desires to multiply the investment in her own life, into the lives of others.

Kees van der Pol is a retired British Columbia high school principal, and has been a Rotarian for 17 years.  He was a two-year president of the Rotary Club of Nakusp from 2011 to 2013, and was Rotary District 5080 Governor in 2016-17.

Currently, Kees is Registrar for Pacific Northwest PETS (Rotary Presidents-Elect Training), Director on the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Association, President of the Indus Peace Park Society, Director on the Kashmir-Peace and Saving Paradise Board, and Treasurer of his Rotary Club.

His wife, Mayumi, is the third club member to complete a two-year presidency, and will become an Assistant Governor in July 2021.  Both are Paul Harris Fellows and Rotary Leadership Institute graduates.  Kees and Mayumi have been married for 43 years and have two daughters, both living in Calgary; and three grandchildren.

Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Kees received a B.A. in Geography and German from the University of Victoria, and an M.Ed. from the University of British Columbia.  In 1974, he spent one year at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, after which he travelled the full length of the Trans-Siberian Railroad.  In 1990, he spent a month in Indonesia examining the education system there.  A highlight was climbing to the top of Krakatoa.

Kees has led seven student tours of Europe and one adult tour to Europe and Morocco.  In 2016, Kees and Mayumi went on a cataract surgery mission to Dembi Dolo, Ethiopia.

During a Rotary Polio Immunization and District 5080 Friendship Exchange tour to Pakistan in 2015, events occurred that led Kees to the idea of creating an international peace park on the India-Pakistan border.
