Our New President's Message
I was introduced to Rotary 41 years ago by a long time Ladner resident who was active in the Rotary Club of Ladner in District 5040. I have always wanted to be involved in the community where I could make a difference in the world and I found this in Rotary. As I moved around the Province in my career, I was a member of the Rotary Club of Saanich in Victoria, the Rotary Club of Burns Lake and the Rotary Club of Kamloops. However, I finally returned to the Ladner Club of which I am Past President, until we moved to Abbotsford where I joined this club. Again, I found a group of Rotarians who have been doing great things both locally and internationally now for 68 years.

The Starfish Pack program has helped many families in the Fraser Valley and it has grown across the Province and now will soon be expanded to Washington State. The Wheelchair Program, by helping one person, changes the lives of whole families. Now that the possibility exists that the wheelchairs may be manufactured within their destination country there will be an even greater impact to their overall community. Our involvement in Rotaplast and the surgeries that are performed on the children affect the lives of not only the individuals, but again the lives of families as a whole. Locally the Club supports many organizations with donations for example; Hospice, Student Scholarships, and many other groups and service organizations in Abbotsford. These are only a few of the many projects that have benefited people locally and internationally.

Since I attended Pre-Pets, Pets, the District Conference cruise, the District Grants Seminar and the District Assembly I have again been reminded how much Rotary means to me. Rotary gives us all the opportunity to be a part of a united group that works for the good of all – an organization that is viewed around the world as something that can be trusted.  Our mandate to end Polio is another example of our partnership that has been so successful.

I would like to share with you our 2018–2019 Rotary Theme on behalf of Rotary International President Barry Rassin - “Be the inspiration”. Rassin stressed the power of Rotary’s new vision statement, and I quote “together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.” This describes the Rotary that we must build.

As your president I want to say that this in not my club, but our club – those of us here in Abbotsford, those out into the world with 1.2 million of us working together to provide a better life for many. My goal in Rotary has always been change. My vision is a more unified world, a world that comes together for the improvement of all people. As your President, I am thanking you for the opportunity to serve. I serve you, the members of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford, our community and I strive to serve the world. Together we will make this a memorable and productive year.

Zone 24/32 Conference

Hello everyone,

First, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you have done or are doing for our organization. Just as our collective humanitarian efforts accomplish more than any of us could individually, it is the collective effort of all of you that allows our organization to operate year in and year out. We appreciate you.

Some of you receiving this are long time friends and acquaintances in Rotary. Some are relatively new. Some of you we have not yet had the privilege of working with. Regardless, we need each of you to consider the following.

September 20-22, 2018, we will be holding the first ever Zone 24/32 Conference. Oh, wait you say, we've had Rotary Institutes for years. Right you are. So, what's the difference? This event is open to ALL Rotarians. Past Officers, incoming officers, current officers, AG's, district Rotarians, club Rotarians. Everyone!

Why you might ask? It is our belief and experience that non-governor types get incredibly motivated, energized, and engaged when they can interact and engage with you who are more experienced and have a different knowledge base (possibly higher Rotary IQ) and skill set. We've seen it over and over. So now we're going to get intentional about it. We're eliminating the silos and allowing for and encouraging growth through collaboration.

That will only be successful if YOU are there. It doesn't matter how long ago you were Governor. We want you back. It doesn't matter how long it has been since you've been to a Zone event, we want to celebrate you. We stand on your shoulders. All of us do. Welcome back. Welcome home.

I am simply the Convener. There is an extraordinary team of people planning an outrageously exciting event. This is YOUR event.
So, go to:

https://portal.clubrunner.ca/50077/sitepage/2018-montreal-conference/conference-schedule
and see what the program looks like. Register and join us in Montreal.

Encourage others from your Governor's Council, District, and Clubs to join you.

We look forward to welcoming you to Montreal....and celebrating you.

Sincerely,
Jeffry Cadorette
Incoming Rotary International Director

The Rotary District 5050 Youth Engaged in Service (YES) program is
currently accepting applications for the 2018/2019 year. Please encourage
high school students entering their junior year of high school to apply.
The program requires the students attend monthly leadership training meetings;

service between October and May.
At the end of June, the students will travel to Honduras for 10 days to work in a

Will you be on the bus?
On March 5th, our board voted unanimously in favour of partnering with our other Abbotsford Rotary clubs, the Chilliwack club, and potentially, several other clubs in a wheelchair project to Guatemala for 2019 and 2020. The proposed project is intended to resource a local manufacturer in Antigua, Guatemala to not only manufacture chairs, but also provide ongoing maintenance for chairs already distributed. The project’s ultimate goal is to build sustainability into the manufacturing of wheelchairs for a local Guatemala company. An integral part of this two-year project will be active participation by members of our club in 2020, as a way of marking our club’s 70th anniversary.

Start planning your vacation time now for early 2020. More details to come.
