Volunteers Needed
In June BC Agriculture in the Classroom was grateful to receive a grant for the Community Service Award from Abbotsford Rotary. We have been able to offer the Spuds in Tubs program to 26 local teachers due to your generosity. Along with the grant came an offer from volunteers to help if help is needed.

BC Ag in the Classroom will be packaging up the Spuds in Tubs kits in preparation for shipping during the 2nd week of February. We are looking for a few volunteers to assist in the packaging of the kits.
Date:
Feb 5th
Time: 9:00
Location: Greenhouse at 1786 Angus Campbell Rd
Across from the Ministry of Ag building (2 buildings down from our meeting place)
Duration: 2 hours
Need: 1) count and place 25 seed potatoes in bags
          2) fill Ziploc bags with plant food

Date:
Feb 6th  -  a much more physical day, some lifting involved
Time:
9:00
Location: Greenhouse at 1786 Angus Campbell Rd
Across from the Ministry of Ag building (2 buildings down from our meeting place)
Duration: 2 hours
Need: 1) Fill boxes with spuds in tubs kits
          2) prepare pallets for shipping, shrink wrapping

If you are able to give a couple of hours to assist with this program it would be greatly appreciated. This work can be a little messy so 'gardening' type clothing is appropriate, also dressing in layers is recommended as it tends to get warm in the greenhouse as you start to move around.

Feature - Why I am a Rotarian - George Ho

My parents, sister and I immigrated to Canada in June 1969 from Hong Kong because of the political uncertainties and rioting since 1967.  We landed in Vancouver and spent 2 weeks staying in a guest room of the Gastown Butler Hotel.

My dad started knocking on doors of construction companies in downtown Vancouver the second week.  He was a successful estimator back home.  My mom soon found a job at a sewing factory in Gastown.

I have been practicing retail pharmacy for over forty years which I enjoyed thoroughly.  I find fulfillment and satisfaction helping customers or patients especially the elderly.  I was a franchise owner with Shoppers Drug Mart for 23 years, Dawson Creek for 14 years and Chilliwack for 9 years.

I joined the DC Kiwanis club in 1989 and totally enjoyed the social interaction and fellowship as well as serving the community with service projects.

I attended a Rotary district conference in October 2015 as a guest. I was very impressed with the impact of Rotary both globally and locally. For Example, End Polio Now, Rise against Hunger, Starfish, Rotary stadium, Rotary Manor, Shelter Box , Love Guatemala, Wheelchairs Guatemala etc.

"Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves”.

“Each day our members pour their passion, integrity and intelligence into completing projects that have a lasting impact. We persevere until we deliver real, lasting solutions."

That is the main reason why I wanted to be a Rotarian.

Will you be on the bus?
On March 5th, our board voted unanimously in favour of partnering with our other Abbotsford Rotary clubs, the Chilliwack club, and potentially, several other clubs in a wheelchair project to Guatemala for 2019 and 2020. The proposed project is intended to resource a local manufacturer in Antigua, Guatemala to not only manufacture chairs, but also provide ongoing maintenance for chairs already distributed. The project’s ultimate goal is to build sustainability into the manufacturing of wheelchairs for a local Guatemala company. An integral part of this two-year project will be active participation by members of our club in 2020, as a way of marking our club’s 70th anniversary.
