Emergency Support During Crises
Mar. 01, 2022
2021 was the busiest year for Abbotsford Emergency Support Service (ESS) in history. Our volunteers contributed thousands of hours responding to four apartment fires, 21 house fires, the BC Wildfire, then of course, BC Fall Floods. Abbotsford ESS Director Sarina MacDonell will share the important work volunteers do in our community year round during emergencies as well as provide a post 2021 flood report.
BIO: Sarina MacDonell is well known for incorporating the human element into her responses. With a degree in Emergency Management and her passion for effective and transparent humanitarian response, Sarina has spent the last ten years responding to events and researching recovery planning in communities across Canada. A few of the events Sarina has deployed include: the 2013 Alberta Floods, 2014 Saskatchewan Wildfire, 2015 Syrian Refugee Crisis, 2015 Cache Creek Flash Flood, 2016 Fort McMurray Wildfire, 2017 BC Wildfire and Southern BC Floods, 2018 Grand Forks Flash Flood and the 2018 BC Wildfire as the Indigenous liaison to the Canadian Red Cross. Unfortunately, disasters are becoming more frequent, and responding often takes its toll. So when Sarina was offered to settle in Abbotsford and join the Abbotsford ESS team, she jumped at the chance – thinking to herself, ‘Whatever happens in Abbotsford?’ For the last 1.5 years, Sarina has supported the ESS team through its busiest year and looks forward to serving the residents of Abbotsford for many more years ahead.
