Update on The Reach
Mar. 16, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Laura Schneider is an award winning curator and museum administrator. She has held curatorial and executive roles in Canadian arts organizations from coast to coast and is currently Executive Director at The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford, BC. Schneider believes that the arts have the power to shape individuals and communities, and is committed to supporting artists and integrating creative practice more fully into the lives of those around her. With a keen understanding of public galleries as dynamic and dialogic spaces she envisions these places as nerve centers of cultural and community life where difficult conversations can occur and understanding and empathy can thrive. She holds degrees in Art History from Queen’s University (Kingston, ON) and Carleton University (Ottawa, ON), a Bachelor of Education degree (University of Ottawa, ON), and professional certificates in Museum Leadership (Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University, IL) and Collections Management (University of Victoria, BC). Abbotsford Community Foundation update
Apr. 06, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Wendy has been a resident of Abbotsford for more than 40 years and graduated from W.J. Mouat high school. She spent 36 years working in the insurance industry, earning her CIP designation and was licensed as a Level 3 Nominee and a Level 2 life insurance agent, with a primary focus on risk assessment of intensive livestock operations and providing appropriate insurance solutions. In 2017, Wendy switched careers and took on the role of Executive Director at the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF), where she had previously held a volunteer role as Board Chair from 2013 to 2016. When people ask her what she does for a living she always responds with “I raise money to give it away!” The ACF has invested more than $12M in Abbotsford through grants and scholarships over their more than 40 year history. Wendy has been a Rotarian with the Abbotsford-Sumas Rotary club for the past 20 years. She was the club President in 2012 and has served on the Board for 15 years in almost all the respective leadership positions, including Treasurer and Secretary, as well as Assistant Governor. Wendy is also a 15 year member of the Abbotsford Executive Association and sat on their Board for a period of 3 years. She is married and has a seventeen-year old daughter. She enjoys volunteering, reading, travelling, and hiking in her spare time. Please check Rotarwrites for the link or contact Chris Oliver at chrisrotarysecretary@gmail.com for the meeting details. Rotary Peace scholar
Apr. 13, 2021 12:00 p.m.
April Klassen grew up in the Fraser Valley, but has found herself impassioned by the opportunities of a global world. The cultural exchanges she embraced as a youth led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in International Studies at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. Upon completing her degree, the next 10 years of her life were spent working and volunteering with NGO’s in the areas of global development, and peacemaking. She has worked in France, Turkey, Iraq, Burundi, Bangladesh and Cambodia amongst other countries. Working with refugee and migrant families has become one of her greatest joys. To see community bridge culture, language and conflict is what drives her to want to continue in this particular field. Receiving a Rotary Peace Fellowship, she hopes, will help equip her in her work to walk alongside women and youth in areas of conflict. She is grateful and humbled by the support she has already received and desires to multiply the investment in her own life, into the lives of others.

Learn more about The PEKA Project - the plight of older, unadopted children in Lesotho - from this week's speaker, Josh Lockington. Please check Rotarwrites for the link or contact Christine Pauls at abbotsford.rotary.secretary@gmail.com for the meeting details.
Josh has been a contributing resident of Abbotsford for 21 years. He is a middle school teacher in the public school system and holds a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. Being married to his wife, Tara, for 18 wonderful years is one of his joys in life. They have 3 engaging and energetic children. Josh and Tara have traveled to over 90 countries on 6 continents together and volunteered and given back in many of them. Working with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in The Gambia, West Africa and caring for children at a malnourished children's clinic in El Salvador are 2 of the ways he has given back. It was his most recent overseas trip that truly impacted him the most though: travelling to receive his newly adopted five year old son from Lesotho, Africa! It is this experience that has ignited a passion within him about the plight of older, unadopted children in Lesotho. His presentation will share about a solution to this problem- The PEKA Project. |
